Hatikvah, the Hope, in Russian
Hatikvah, The Hope, is the national anthem of Israel. Its words come from a poem Naftali Herz Imber wrote in 1878, and its melody is an old folk tune that traveled across Europe. It speaks of a hope two thousand years old: to be a free people in one's own land.
Olga Anikina's Russian version carries that promise faithfully. A star shines in the sky, the heart keeps its ancient law, and the soul strains forever toward Zion in the east. It even keeps the Hebrew inside it, Ayin le Tzion tzofia and Eretz Tzion Yerushalayim, so the anthem stays itself while it speaks a new language.
Why bring it into English
An anthem is a promise made in words. When those words reach people only as a tune, the promise is muffled. Bringing Hatikvah into Russian, and into English, lets the hope inside it speak plainly to everyone who hears it. That is what Jewish Songs for All sets out to do.
